GWS Medika at HMA 2024: Supporting the Future of Healthcare Transformation

Hospital Management Asia (HMA) 2024 was successfully held at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center from August 27 to 30, 2024.

This event, which had the theme "Keeping Pace with Healthcare Challenges," had more than 1,200 participants. They are leaders and decision-makers in hospitals throughout Asia, such as CEOs, Chief Medical Officers (CMOs), Chiefs of Nursing, medical device manufacturers, and practitioners in quality management and patient experience.

This time, the countries participating in HMA are the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei, Hong Kong, China, India, and several other countries, such as the United States, England, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea.

GWS Medika was one of the participants from Indonesia. Present at this event was the Chief Medical Officer, dr. Koh Hau Tek also moderated the second day's discussion on the role of nurses in creating economic value in patient care.

In addition, other GWS Medika delegates were Puspa Wahita Cahyono (Head of Service Excellence and Quality Management), dr. Agnes Susanto (Head of Operation), dr. Michael Vincentius (Cluster Manager), and Tika Astari S (Quality Management).

Encouraging innovation through digitalization

Digitalization was one of the main topics that attracted the participants' attention during the event. Digitalization in health facilities is essential, especially in reducing variations in patient services.

"Digitalization can increase the efficiency of health facilities because health workers no longer need to repeat recording the same information," said Tika Astari S, Quality Management, GWS Medika.

In Indonesia, the Ministry of Health's policy mandating electronic medical records in all health facilities also drives the digitalization movement. However, implementation in the field remains problematic because remote areas still lack internet access and qualified human resources to use electronic medical records.

Nursing plays a crucial part in patient care

The session on the role of nursing on the second day also provided new insights for the participants, including the GWS Medika delegation.

"The role of nursing is much broader than I had thought. They deliver a high value of care because they are constantly in contact with patients," said Tika Astari.

dr. Koh led the discussion with panelists from various countries, such as Percy Aiggie S. Laura from The Medical City Ortigas, Bryan Lin from Subang Jaya Medical Center, Akanksha Dicholkar from Medcare Hospital, and dr. Susanna Wai Yee Lee from Hongkong Baptist Hospital.

In this discussion, HMA also invited the nursing chief, who explained several problems of nurses, including the nurse-to-patient ratio and their lack of competence.

In 2024, HMA held its first dedicated session on nursing, which resulted from feedback from participants who attended HMA 2023 in Kuala Lumpur.

Cross-country collaboration and cooperation opportunities

The HMA event was an opportunity for knowledge sharing and international collaboration. On this occasion, the GWS Medika delegation met with representatives of hospitals in Singapore and China. In the future, GWS Medika hopes to work with them to provide holistic and sustainable services.

GWS Medika will extend hospital services in Singapore and China. Once treatment is completed and patients return to Indonesia, they will receive high-quality rehabilitation services comparable to those provided by their previous facilities.

Challenges and solutions for healthcare facilities

With the increasing demand for healthcare services, healthcare facilities face various challenges, including the usage of electronic medical records and an imbalanced nurse-to-patient ratio. HMA presents several innovations in digitalization and how they keep patient data confidential.

HMA 2024 is more than just a forum for exchanging ideas and innovations; it also plays an important role in developing networks and collaborations across Asian hospitals. For GWS Medika, this event delivers several benefits that will be implemented soon, such as digitalization in operational processes and greater sustainability standards.

HMA 2024 has proven itself as a relevant and strategic platform for responding to future healthcare challenges.
