What is the DTP combo vaccine?
The DTP Combo vaccine is administered in several doses to babies and children aged 2 months to 5 years. This vaccine is safe and effective in protecting children from six diseases:
1. Diphtheria
Bacterial infections can block the respiratory tract, causing the child to stop breathing or even die.
2. Tetanus
Prevent infections caused by tetanus bacteria, which attack untreated wounds.
3. Pertussis
Protects against a hundred-day cough, a persistent cough that causes difficult breathing.
4. Polio IPV
Protects against the polio virus, which causes paralysis.
5. HiB
HiB causes inflammation of the brain, pneumonia, and ear infections.
6. Hepatitis B
This viral infection can cause yellow eyes and skin, further infection, and even lead to liver cancer.
Vaccination schedule
According to the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI), your child should get five doses (including three doses for babies and two booster shots for children) of the DTP vaccine, usually at the following ages:
Dose 1: 2 months
Dose 2: 3 months
Dose 3: 4 months
Dose 4: 18 months
Dose 5: 5 years
In adults, the DTP vaccine is administered every ten years.
Contraindications
The DTP Combo vaccine should be administered to all children. However, some children may be unable to get the vaccine for the reasons listed below:
- Severe allergy to one of the vaccine components and to the previous administration of the DTP Combo vaccine.
- Having a history of progressive encephalopathy, uncontrolled seizures, or other neurological disorders should delay the administration of the DTP Combo vaccine until after treatment or when the condition is stable.
- Critically ill
- Currently undergoing immunosuppressive therapy
The most common side effects of vaccination are:
- fever, fussiness
- decreased appetite
- diarrhea, vomiting
- pain or reddish swelling around the area the needle went to.
- a small lump at the injection area that will persist for some weeks or months.
The side effects of childhood vaccination usually get away in a few days. However, if the conditions do not improve, you should immediately contact a doctor.
