Have Rheumatism? Avoid These Foods

Rheumatism, or rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease characterized by severe pain, stiffness, and swelling in the joints. If you have rheumatism, it’s best to avoid red meat, fried foods, processed foods, and gluten.

People with RA experience intense pain in the joints, which limits movement. The frustration that comes with it can also negatively affect the mood.

Although no specific food may treat rheumatism, whatever we consume affects our health. Maintaining a balanced diet and lifestyle may help reduce pain and the severity of symptoms.

Certain foods should be avoided as they can worsen existing symptoms. Here is a list of foods to avoid if you have rheumatoid arthritis.

1. Red meat

Red meat contains saturated and trans fats that trigger inflammation and obesity (excess weight). Obesity makes rheumatoid arthritis symptoms feel more painful because of the large burden on the joints. Processed meat can also increase inflammation.

If you still eat red meat, choose high-quality beef. Research suggests that how cows are fed impacts the quality of their meat.

Grain-fed, factory-farmed beef is high in pro-inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids, whereas grass-fed and pastured-raised beef contains higher levels of anti-inflammatory conjugated linoleic acid.

2. Sugar and simple carbohydrate

Like fat, sugar contributes to weight gain. What’s more, all types of sugar—from organic to brown sugar—can increase the risk of rheumatoid arthritis.

When blood sugar spikes after consuming sugar or any type of simple carbohydrates, such as refined flour, the body releases cytokines, chemicals that trigger inflammation in the joints.

Sugar and simple carbs also cause weight gain, which can further strain the joints. If you’re craving carbs or sweets, you can replace them with vitamin- and fiber-rich sweet potatoes and low-glycemic fruits, such as berries.

3. Fried and processed foods

Processed and fried foods contain many types of toxins called advanced glycation end products (AGEs). Accumulated AGEs are bad for the body because they can increase cell oxidation and trigger inflammation.

Reducing fried foods in your diet can help with weight management and strengthen the body’s defenses against disease and aging.

4. Salty foods

High salt intake has been related to increased inflammation and a higher of developing RA. Salty meals can also worsen arthritis symptoms. The recommended daily sodium intake is less than 2,300 milligrams (mg) (about one teaspoon of salt).

Many processed and canned foods, such as vegetables, meats, and soups, contain high levels of salt. Processed meats like sausages and bacon, as well as fast foods like pizza, burgers, and French fries, are also rich in sodium. Look for products that are low in sodium or have no added salt.

5. Gluten

Wheat and other grains contain a protein known as gluten. Some people believe that eating gluten-free foods can help manage rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. If you have gluten sensitivity, avoiding gluten may be beneficial.

While there is no strong evidence to support the direct effects of gluten on rheumatoid arthritis, it is wise to start switching from whole wheat bread to gluten-free bread, pasta, and other products.

In addition to avoiding the foods listed above, limit your intake of added sugar and alcohol. Some sources recommend limiting your consumption of dairy products to prevent RA symptoms from getting worse.

Before making dietary changes, consult a doctor to ensure they suit your specific needs. Make sure you apply a diet pattern for rheumatism that will benefit your health.
