This initiative represents a significant milestone in enhancing international access to quality healthcare services across Southeast Asia, particularly for patients from Indonesia and Malaysia.

This collaboration is rooted in a shared vision of delivering global standards in medical care.

GWS Medika—a provider of modern and integrated healthcare services in Indonesia—and Sunway Medical Centre—a leading integrated private healthcare group with an extensive network of hospitals and healthcare services in Malaysia—have agreed to strengthen their cooperation in clinical services, medical education, and cross-border referral systems.

A key pillar of this partnership is the clinical exchange program. Through this initiative, healthcare professionals from both institutions will participate in joint training, Continuing Medical Education (CME), and professional development programs.

The goal is to enhance the quality of patient care, build mutual trust and confidence between GWS Medika’s and Sunway’s physicians, ensuring a seamless referral system and continuity of treatment, which leads to improved patient outcomes.

The partnership will focus on several key drivers, including oncology, orthopaedics, gastroenterology, and fertility, as well as in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Furthermore, patients who have undergone treatment in Malaysia will be able to continue their recovery and follow-up care in Indonesia through GWS Medika’s clinical team, ensuring continuous therapy for optimal results.

Apart from clinical aspects, both institutions are also committed to joint health education and awareness campaigns.

Regular webinars, public seminars, and awareness initiatives will be conducted to enhance public health literacy and introduce collaborative services to the broader community.

This collaboration also leverages each institution’s digital presence and offline networks, including social media platforms, patient communities, and strategic partners.

This digital strength is expected to broaden reach and foster a more inclusive and sustainable healthcare ecosystem.

Dr. Koh Hau-Tek, Chief Medical Officer of GWS Medika, stated that this partnership marks a significant leap in providing more holistic and integrated care.

“As GWS Medika continues to drive global standards of healthcare in Indonesia, I believe this cross-border collaboration will make a step forward with a positive impact on our patients, healthcare professionals, and the ASEAN regional healthcare system as a whole,” he said.

In line with this, Dr. Khoo Chow Huat from Sunway Medical Centre emphasized the increasing importance of partnerships like this in today’s globalized healthcare landscape.

“This collaboration is a significant step forward in building a connected healthcare ecosystem in both countries. By combining our strengths, we aim to deliver seamless, high-quality care to patients across borders while also nurturing professional growth among our medical teams,” he stated.

Dr. Khoo also noted that Sunway Medical Centre has been ranked among the top 250 hospitals globally and recognized as the No. 1 hospital in Malaysia in Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals 2025 rankings.

Founded 25 years ago to meet the community's evolving healthcare needs, Sunway Medical Centre has grown into Malaysia’s largest private quaternary hospital, with 810 licensed beds, 28 Centres of Excellence, and over 60 medical specialties.

Upon the opening of Tower F in 2026 – its sixth block, which will be a dedicated children’s medical centre – Sunway Medical Centre will have a capacity of approximately 1,100 beds.

As part of its expansion strategy to provide more communities with access to quality healthcare, Sunway Healthcare Group will increase its footprint all over Malaysia with tertiary hospitals nationwide.

With this growth, the group will have a combined capacity of over 3,000 beds among its network of hospitals by 2030.

Following the signing ceremony, the delegates continued their visit to GWS Medika’s other locations, where they observed the medical center operations and world-class facilities firsthand.
