GWS Medika and PanAsia's Men's Health Talk: How to Stay Healthy and Active in Your 40s

GWS Medika, in collaboration with PanAsia Surgery Group, held a men's health talk-themed Stay Healthy and Active in Your 40s at the Clinic Lounge, GWS Medika Permata Hijau Medical Centre on December 4, 2024. This event presented two speakers, dr. Yoga D.S. Kurniawan from GWS Medika and dr. Jay Lim from PanAsia Surgery Group. They discussed key topics related to men's health, such as erectile dysfunction, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer.

In his presentation, dr. Yoga Kurniawan explained that erectile dysfunction is often caused by both physical and mental factors. "As we age, the risk of erectile dysfunction increases, especially if there are chronic health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, or side effects of certain medications. A less active lifestyle is also a major trigger," said dr. Yoga.

He added that a physical examination can detect penile disorders, while laboratory tests can evaluate testosterone, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels to help diagnose erectile dysfunction.

Meanwhile, dr. Jay Lim explained prostate cancer, which can occur in men starting at the age of 30. Symptoms to watch out for include trouble peeing, pain, blood in the urine or sperm. "Prostate cancer has a relatively slow progression and can be effectively treated if detected early. Therefore, we strongly recommend that men over 50 undergo routine annual screening," said dr. Jay.

He also discussed testicular cancer which is more common in men aged 15-35 years. Symptoms include a lump or swelling in one of the testicles, a feeling of heaviness in the scrotum, and persistent discomfort. "Early screening is crucial because early detection significantly increases the chances of successful treatment," he added.

The event received an enthusiastic response from the participants, most of whom were men aged 30 and above. In addition to gaining in-depth insights, participants were also engaged directly with the speakers, who kindly answered various questions related to men's health.

Through this event, GWS Medika and PanAsia Surgery Group aim to raise public awareness about the importance of maintaining men's health, especially during their productive and later years. With a healthy lifestyle and regular health checks, it is hoped that every man can remain active and enjoy an optimal quality of life.
